Enhancing Political Participation of Marginalized Women in Nepal was a 2 year project implemented since October 2008 to September 2010. The project was funded by United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF)and implemented in 5 selected districts from 5 development regions of Nepal namely: Sankhuwasabha in the East, Kavrepalanchowk in the Centre, Lamjung in the West, Banke in the Mid-West and Kanchanpur in the Far West of Nepal. The project was implemented by WVAF as one of the national partners leading the capacity building component of the project in consortium with Association of District Development Committees of Nepal (ADDCN) as the lead and National Indigenous Women Forum (NIWF) as partner and DDCs of 5 Selected Districts as local partners. The primary target groups of the project included marginalized women from a total of 25 Village Development Committees (VDCs) that is 5 VDCs from each selected district, local authorities of the selected VDCs and District Development Committees (DDCs).

Goal of the Project:

To increase capacity and political participation of marginalized women to strengthen political and democratic processes in Nepal.

Objectives of the Project:

  • Organizing marginalized women into Women Forum for Democracy,  
  • Capacity building of marginalized women on political and democratic processes,
  • Providing political and democratic education through a variety of means and coalition, network and advocacy

Project Results:

  • Improved women's capacity to strengthen democratic process at local level;
  • Increased capacity of civil society organizations and local authorities on civic empowerment using various advocacy tools and techniques;
  • Established and strengthened networks to take proactive steps towards creating space for women's political participation
  • Produced and disseminated pamphlets with the slogan "Participation of marginalized women in Nepali politics is the primary need for building an inclusive and prosperous Nepal"

  • Organize marginalized women into WFD, a critical mass
  • Capacity building on political, governance and democratic processes
  • Political, governance and democratic education through a variety of means
  • Coalition, network and advocacy
