This UN Women supported project intervention was carried out (August, 2017 - January, 2019) in three districts (Sunsari, Kavrepalanchowk and Kailali) of Nepal under joint venture arrangement between Training Centre Nepal and World Vision Advocacy Forum. It targeted 1,840 excluded women consisting of 427 Migrant Worker Returnee Women, 1,113 Home-Based Workers and 300 Women Living with HIV/AIDS.

Objective/planned outputs:

The overall objective of the project intervention was to provide the excluded women graduated from the Vocational Development Training Centre with business development services for their improved and sustainable livelihoods. The three specific objectives were to:

  • Identify and analyse the needs of up to 2,000 excluded women for business start-up or job placement supports
  • Provide up to 2,000 excluded women with business start-up or job placement and further development of technical skills
  • Support and facilitate a linkage between 2,000 excluded women and the locally available business development resources, the markets and job opportunities

The planned outputs were:

  • 1,000 excluded women are provided with business start-up supports (in kind worth NPR. 10,000 per person);
  • 1,000 excluded women are provided with job placement supports; 
  • 800 excluded women are provided with supports to appear at skill test examination under National Skills Testing Board (NSTB), Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training;  
  • 1,000 excluded women are provided with opportunity to interact with financial institutions on the procedures to access to financial services;
  • 400 excluded women are provided with supports to have access to financial services;
  • 1,000 excluded women are provided with opportunity to interact; with private sector associations; and
  • 400 excluded women get registered with the private sector business associations

Achievements of outputs /impacts:

By the end of 18 months of project implementation, 

  • 692 targeted excluded women were provided with job placement supports such as interactions with potential employers and filling up of the job application form provided by Labour Service Centres;
  • 1,000 targeted excluded women were provided with material supports to start business in tailoring, off season vegetable farming, livestock raising, retail shops;
  • 410  targeted excluded women received  7-10 days refresher vocational skills training on off season vegetable farming, tailoring, beautician, cook, animal husbandry and hand embroidery;
  • 622 targeted excluded women  submitted application for  NSTB Skill Testing examination and 496 of them completed skills testing examinations;
  • 1,000 excluded women interacted with private sector associations (PSAs) and out of them 411  were facilitated to get registered with PSAs; and
  • 1,001 targeted excluded women were facilitated to interact with financial institutions. Out of them, 346 were linked with financial institutions. The results of a quick impact assessment of project implementation and 50 success case stories prepared, have revealed that achievement of planned outputs had positive impacts on enhancing the status of the targeted women in their families and community as well as increased involvement in employment and business undertaking for increasing their incomes.
